Jennifer Monroe, majoring in Pharmacy, is a DiversityJobs Scholarship Finalist

I chose my major, Pharmacy, because I have always dreamed of being in the Medical field so I could help people who are less fortunate than myself. I dreamt of myself having many professions; from a doctor to a surgeon.  One day, these dreams were crushed.

On October 13, 2003, when I was 11 years old, I was walking home from school when I was hit by an impaired driver who ran a red light. Ever since that day, I have had an ongoing tremor in my dominant arm. I was forced to switch over to doing everything with my non-dominant arm; this included writing, eating and much more. I am very limited in what I can do now but that experience has only furthered my dream in having a profession in the medical field. However, I can no longer be a doctor nor could I be a surgeon. I aspire to be a Pharmacist because they actually do help people in ways that an average person cannot. They make medicines and give them to people who are in need of them so people can stay healthy.

To graduate with this degree would mean the world to me because I would accomplish my biggest dream and overcome my biggest obstacle. I would prove to the world that, even though I have a disability, I can still help and add value to society. I would also stand as an example for many who believe they cannot accomplish their dreams because something is holding them back. My disability holds me back in many ways every single day, but I do not let it stop me from being the best I can be. With this example set, I honestly believe I can change the lives of those who consider themselves insignificant with no purpose in life. I have been there and I have overcome what many people cannot and do not overcome themselves. This is why it is important for me to graduate with this degree; to not only help myself, but to help others.’s scholarship program is proud to announce Jennifer Monroe as one of the finalists for its December 2012 application deadline. Vote for her essay (Facebook ‘Like’ and other social media sharing options in left column), click the ‘star’ just above comments section below, and/or leave comments of support to help us with the selection process.

It is a worthwhile profession, and I am sure you will do a lot of good for the people you help. • Jennie, I am so proud of you! I remember that day, October 13. We all thought you weren’t going to make it through. All around the world, people were praying for you. When you woke up, no one would have ever imagined you would make it as far as you did. We didn’t think you’d ever get to walk again or even regain your voice and your ability to function. You may have lost your memory and even your ability to completely control your right arm but, no matter how hard things get for you, you are a fighter and a survivor and you will make it through. No one is more deserving than you for this scholarship. I love and idol you, Jennie.

An incredibly moving story, from a truly incredible person. Jennie it is people like you that give meaning to the phrase “you can accomplish anything if you set your mind to it.” There is no question that you have overcome so much, and still have to even to this day. I know what this scholarship would mean to you, and it is for that reason that I wish you the best of luck. No one that has come as far as you deserves to have even more student loans. I pray the wind will always be at your back.

Jennifer is truly an incredible human being; the key word here being “human.” To be human is to be flawed. There is not a single person on Earth that does not have flaws, many of which go unseen. Some people wish to be more stoic, some of us wish to be more intelligent. Some people are self-conscious of their appearance. But everyone wishes to be a better person. Jennifer’s only flaw is that she can’t help more people than she wishes. Her life was completely changed on October 13, yet her mindset remained unchanged, constant. This event didn’t make Jennifer falter, it only made her ambition to be what many of us can only aspire to. To help others in need is the single greatest gift anyone can offer. This is what she wishes to do with her life. If Jennifer is presented with this scholarship, she will continue on to truly be a great person in this world. Winning this scholarship will surely help her cause, and furthermore, the cause of others. Please help Jennifer help others, she deserves this more than anyone. Good luck Jennifer.

    • Thank you, Eric! Reading this comment made my world so much brighter! I am going to try my hardest to help every person I can! 🙂

Absolutely incredible woman. I cannot imagine what I would have done if I had gone through the same experience as Ms. Monroe. I went to high school with Jennifer, and I never knew about her disability. She was always upbeat, friendly, and willing to go out of her way to help others. Jennifer Monroe would make an excellent pharmacist, I wish her the best in obtaining this scholarship.
